The 10-Point Plan and Funding

In the spring of 2021, the Executive Team created the Chaffey College 10-Point Plan. This Plan provides a list of actionable items to advance access, equity, and antiracist work as a College. 

The MacKenzie Scott gift has accelerated the College's capacity to support the 10-Point Plan. The College prioritized the gift to address racial equity gaps, improve student success outcomes, and institutionally commit to equity-minded practices for our most vulnerable students. 

Hard Look at Our Community Needs

In addition to the initiatives outlined in the 10-Point Plan, the Executive Team conducted a listening tour: a town hall meeting with faculty and staff, community partner discussions, and commissioned research to gain first-hand access to students' reports regarding barriers to their academic and career success. Based on broad-based input, the following strategies were deployed:

Men of Color Support Efforts and Climate Study (Ongoing Work)

Scholars Dr. Frank Harris and Dr. Luke Wood were engaged as consultants to help us address the loss of male students of color and conduct a climate study for the campus.

The following outcomes were achieved from this study:

  • Developed and distributed a climate survey to students and all employees. This survey was disseminated in November 2021; data was analyzed, and the report was presented to Chaffey College in spring 2022. More than 1,000 students and nearly 400 employees participated in the survey.  This report was shared at the April Governing Board Meeting and during our 2022 Fall Convocation, ensuring the findings and recommendations were shared with the broadest audience possible.
  • Created and continue to lead a Men of Color Student Success Model Taskforce composed of faculty and administrators. The task force focuses on evaluating academic and demographic data trends, conducting student focus groups, and developing a plan to better serve our male students of color in re-enrollment, retention, and completion.

 

Dr. Harris and Dr. Wood were the keynote speakers for the 2022 Fall Convocation. They are renowned experts researching student equity, institutional effectiveness, and student success.

College-Wide Student Mental Health & Wellness Program (Ongoing Work)

Historically, the College offered a crisis-based mental health program and expanded its offering to telehealth during the Pandemic. In the early implementation of the 10-Point Plan, the College initially intended to focus on a co-response model, creating a collaboration between a mental health expert and our Campus Police Department. Fortunately, Campus Police secured funding for this model program, which is continuing to present.

During this time, a significant number of students began returning to College, requesting mental health resources to help them stay on track. Therefore, the Director of Social Wellness and Behavioral Support position was established and filled. Scott's funding provided seed money for the initial salary and health benefits. By 2023, the College obtained ongoing Mental Health allocation from the Chancellor's Office.

Overcoming Barriers Funding (Ongoing Work and Launching in Fall 2024)

To ensure ongoing funding is available to students in crises, foster engagement and belonging, and incentivize success, Chaffey College Foundation has been charged with serving marginalized students to ensure artificial impediments do not hinder their accomplishments. Work is currently ongoing or about to launch. These include:

  • Fueling Students Through Success Fund: This ongoing funding (independent of the Panther Care Program's emergency grants) is designated to support students facing financial barriers to completing educational goals, such as, but not limited to, covering tuition and fees, textbooks, transportation support, childcare, basic needs support, housing, training, licensure exams, technology, health care, etc.  
  • Student Success Incentive Program: Launching fall 2024, this funding will encourage students to reach academic milestones on their educational journeys. The program focuses on providing monetary incentives to students who move from Explorer to Navigator to Achiever.
  • Community Partnerships: This funding is designed to enhance the partnerships, visibility, and reputation of the Chaffey College Foundation and Chaffey College. Establishing donor relationships, identifying grant opportunities, and accepting legacy gifts are vital components of the Foundation's work. This funding will support these efforts.

UndocuSuccess Fellowship Endowment (launching fall 2024)

The UndocuSuccess Fellowship is a year-round program designed to provide professional development opportunities and mentoring for undocumented students in partnership with the Center for Culture and Social Justice (CCSJ) and the Career Center. Students will gain hands-on experience with a campus department while being mentored throughout the process. The fellowship will provide selected students a $3,000 ($1,500 in the fall and $1,500 in the spring semesters).

Academic Senate Endowment (launching fall 2024)

This funding will provide Chaffey College faculty enhanced opportunities for research and scholarship, professional development, and access to pedagogical approaches to advance DEIA work. In partnership with Academic Senate leaders, the College will institutionalize the framework to expand funding for conferences, targeted research, mini-grants, recognition events, speaker series, and other work that supports key initiatives of the College. 

  • Academic Senate to develop a plan to utilize the Legacy Faculty Endowment, which will provide ongoing funding to support faculty professional development. This fund will offer resources and opportunities for faculty development and innovation for generations to come, ensuring sustained academic excellence and leadership.

From Enrollment to Employment Endowment (launch spring 2025)

This funding will assist students with securing living wage positions. In partnership with the Career and InTech Centers, this funding will support the augmentation of a job developer/job placement position(s). The job developer(s) will be responsible for identifying vacant, high wage positions that match students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities. They will work with industry professionals, advisory committees, faculty, and apprenticeship professionals to ensure our students have early access to high-quality career opportunities and job placement.

Building FIERCE (Functional Inspirational, Effective, Responsive, Connected, and Efficient) Spaces

This one-time funding allocation will help support the new Student Service Campus Center Hub. These funds will complement Measure P funding to complete the project, as well as work to ensure the finished building will provide spaces that promote student engagement and belonging.
