Submissions

The Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art serves as a learning lab featuring temporary exhibitions of innovative contemporary art throughout the year. Exhibitions and programming are organized with our students in mind in order to augment their academic experience by complementing the college’s curricula and broadening the understanding of contemporary art. We strive to foster critical thinking and to encourage innovation and investigation through contemporary art. The Museum advances the mission of Chaffey College by providing a dynamic, supportive, and engaging environment where our diverse students learn and benefit.

Considerations for Submissions

The Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art schedules its programming with a number of considerations in mind. Below is a list of some factors to consider regarding programming at the Museum.

Our audience includes the general population of students, faculty and staff at Chaffey College, the general public in our communities and the larger museum-going public of Southern California.

Consideration is given to the relevance of the exhibition to the mission of the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art.

Consideration is given to the relevance of the exhibition to the mission of Chaffey College.

Consideration is given to the relevance of the exhibition to various programs of study and curricular connections at Chaffey College and how the exhibition might serve the faculty and instruction in a general or specific way.

Consideration is given to the diversity of artists represented, the materials and techniques presented, and the diversity of ideas, concepts and theories explored.

Consideration is given to exhibitions that serve as vehicles for understanding diverse cultures, experiences, and viewpoints.

Consideration is given to exhibitions that may include events or programming that will increase accessibility by non-specialists and students.

Consideration is given to exhibitions that may include events or programming aimed at scholars and specialists.

Priority is given to group exhibitions or thematic exhibitions rather than exhibitions featuring the work of a single artist.

Non-specific exhibitions, or exhibitions with a vague organizing theme, will most likely not fit our parameters.

Exhibitions may present topics and media outside the parameters more narrowly defined as visual arts.

Our exhibitions feature contemporary art; the Wignall Museum of Contemporary art is not equipped to handle historic works of art and does not focus its programming on such works. Our exhibitions feature objects and media on temporary loan from collectors, artists, and institutions. The museum is a non-collecting institution.

Submissions will not be considered unless guidelines are followed.

Submissions from faculty will be given the same consideration (according to museum guidelines and the considerations described above).

Resume, CV or Biography

Your materials should focus on details that are relevant to your art practice and your experience as an artist and arts professional. Include your exhibition history or relevant professional experience in the arts. Do you not include irrelevant work experience  and materials. Instead, focus on introducing yourself and your art practice in a biography in paragraph format.

Your biography and Artist Statement may overlap or be very similar, or you may combine the two. A few possible topics address and discuss:

Who are you? What is your education background or training in the arts? Have you participated in any residencies? What do you do (art practice process and medium)? Do you have other personal interests that are relevant to your art practice? Where are you now (geographically) and where are you from (historically or culturally)? What is the timeline and history of your work and practice? How does your work relate to your specific moment in history? How do you make your work (materials and processes)? Why do you make your work?

Statement

Include a statement discussing your art practice in general, or you can focus on addressing and discussing the specific project that you are submitting for review. Be sure that your statement and biography together provide sufficient insight into your practice as an artist and the specific image portfolio you are sharing.

Portfolio

Include representative documentation of the work you would be interested in exhibiting (images, video, sound, etc.). Please focus on work over the past few years. You may include as many artworks as necessary, but please be concise in order to best represent yourself. There are no formatting requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to follow-up with any unreadable files that are submitted. We will request higher resolution images if necessary.

Slide List or Image Captions

Be sure your images include a numbered list that corresponds with the images, or ensure that your images are sufficiently captioned, providing title, date, medium, and dimensions for all works.

Special Projects

If you are a gallery, curator or artist working on a grant project or other special project and would like to discuss collaboration with the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art, please submit a brief outline of the proposed exhibition or project to us at: wignall.staff@chaffey.edu.
