Course Requirements
The English 1A Success Center requirement will encourage you to reflect on your writing and learning process, help you discover academic resources and services that promote college success, and give you feedback from more experienced writing mentors.
You may complete 3 of any combination of the activities below to fulfill your English 1A requirement. View the English-1A Success Center requirement video for more information about Success Center activities.
Group Activities
if you prefer to talk out your ideas, or if you would like a pre-scheduled time to start and finish your activity, choose a Group Activity.
How Group Activities work:
You may participate in Group Activities either in-person or on Zoom. (In-person activities are offered at the Rancho, Chino, and Fontana Campus.)
To start, a tutor reviews tips and strategies with you and a few other writers. During the activity, you will have opportunities to ask questions, reflect on your own experiences, and collaborate with fellow writers. Group Activities last about an hour and occur on set days at set times.

Self-paced Activities
if you want (or need) to fly solo and complete activities at times that work for you, choose a self-paced Activity.
How Self-paced Activities work:
Over the course of a week, you'll participate in an online discussion group facilitated by an instructor.
First, you will review the materials to learn about tips and strategies for college success. You will also complete reflections about your own writing and learning process, and participate in discussion boards with fellow Chaffey writers.

PAL Group Activities
PAL stands for Peer Assisted Learning. Your class PAL is a writing tutor who participates in your class each week. This means they are familiar with all your class materials and understand your professor's expectations for each assignment.
How PAL Group Activities work:
PAL Group activities are weekly group sessions designed to help you directly with the assignments in your course. During a PAL Group, you will have opportunities to ask questions, reflect on your own progress and experiences, and collaborate with your fellow writers.

Who is my English PAL?
PALs are embedded in select sections of English 1A and English 1A Dual Enrollment. If you have a PAL assigned to your class, you can find their name, availability and contact information in Canvas on the PALs page. The success center staff can also help you identify your PAL and their hours.
How do I make an appointment with my PAL?
Appointments with your PAL can be made through the PAL link on your English 1A course
page in Canvas.
