Following are Chaffey College courses offered in Arabic:
Elementary Modern Standard Arabic - ARABIC 1
Introduction to the four basic language skills in functional modern Arabic – aural,
oral, reading and writing. Students learn the basics of Arabic script and pronunciation
while building a foundational vocabulary. Arabic cultural norms, values and customs
are explored and serve as a basis for additional skill-building practice. Fourteen
hours of supplemental learning in a success center that supports this course is required.
Corresponds to the first year of high school Arabic.
Elementary Modern Standard Arabic - ARABIC 2
Continued presentation of the four basic language skills in functional modern Arabic
– aural, oral, reading and writing. Skills focus on the continuing practice of Arabic
script, correct pronunciation, vocabulary expansion and applying the rules of grammar
and tense to simple declarative sentences and short conversations. Arabic cultural
norms, values and customs are explored and serve as a basis for additional skill-building
practice. Fourteen hours of supplemental learning in a success center that supports
this course is required. Corresponds to the second year of high school Arabic.
Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic - ARABIC 3
Review of basic Arabic grammar. Introduction to more complex sentence structures and
verb tenses. Students use Modern Standard Arabic at an intermediate level in speaking
listening, reading and writing. Includes intermediate uses of Modern Standard Arabic
alphabet, conversation strategies and cultural interactions. Arabic cultural norms,
values and customs are explored and serve as a basis for additional skill-building
practice. Fourteen hours of supplemental learning in a success center that supports
this course is required.
Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic - ARABIC 4
Continued study of Modern Standard Arabic leading to a more accurate understanding
and use of the language through placing emphasis on advanced-level speaking, reading,
writing and listening skills. Sophisticated vocabulary and complex grammatical structures
are applied to speaking and writing assignments. Reading comprehension in Arabic is
developed in the context of cultural texts and themes. Ten hours of supplemental learning
in a success center that supports this course is required.
