Wild Fire Smoke Advisory

September 10, 2024

Dear Campus Community,

I hope this message finds you well and safe. I want to provide an update from the Office of Safety and Risk Management regarding the current air quality due to the current fire activity.  The most recent update from the Air Quality Management District (AQMD) shows our air quality has improved.  Therefore, the District has lifted the restriction on outdoor activity, effective immediately. However, departments such as Athletics and Maintenance and Operations may make adjustments as necessary.

This morning’s air quality rating is now “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”  If you have limitations that may be affected by the current air quality rating, please self-monitor outdoor activity during this time.

Should staff desire increased protection, Risk Management has a supply of N95’s which reduce 95 % of the particulate matter in the air.  They may also reduce the smoke smell/odor in the air.  Should you desire to obtain one please fill out the attached “form for voluntary respirator use” for wearing an N-95 and contact Risk Management.

Risk Management recommends the following precautions:

  1. Maintenance and Operations is verifying and replacing air filters on as many of the indoor air purifiers as quickly as possible.
  2. Employees with sensitivity to particulate matter:
    1. Please know that you are able to use personal leave should you be negatively impacted by the current air conditions.  Please follow the established practices for notifying your supervisor.
    2. N-95’s are available in the Risk Management office located in the Student Services/Administration building in room 202.
  3. Buildings and Indoor offices: Keep doors closed as much as possible.

Your cooperation and commitment to these practices are crucial in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for everyone. We appreciate your efforts and dedication to our community's well-being.  Please know that keeping the campus community safe is one of our most important priorities.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me (ext. 6550 or julie.leggin@chaffey.edu) or Nicole Leonard (ext. 6523 or nicole.leonard@chaffey.edu) if you have any questions or need further information.

We will update the community as conditions change.

Thank you,
Julie Leggin
