Undocumented Student Support Announcement

February 1, 2024

I am writing to you with some exciting developments. As many of you are aware, our undocumented student population has declined greatly in recent years. This is due to the pandemic and of course, a variety of other factors. Understanding the importance of rebuilding this community, the Governing Board has tasked the Executive Team with some areas of focus.

At the Board’s recent annual retreat, I shared with our Governing Board members the progress the College has made, including our Undocumented/LGBTQIA+ Liaison, free immigration services, and the new PRISM Space. While both of these additions have helped provide resources to students, the group discussed how we can do more to help these students prepare for their lives after their time at Chaffey College.

As a result, the Board has charged the Executive Team and I to establish a fellowship program for undocumented students as soon as possible. This initiative is in alignment with the College’s 10-Point Plan and will involve MacKenzie Scott funding. We anticipate the fellowship to build off of the success of the College’s DREAM Project, where students will receive funding, professional development, and more. Our vision for this new project is to be housed in the Center for Culture and Social Justice.

I thank the Governing Board members for their vision and for putting all students first. More information on this exciting news will be forthcoming.

Thank you,

Henry D. Shannon, Ph.D.
