Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy
January 17, 2025
Dear Campus Community,
As we approach the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I wanted to take time to reflect upon his legacy, and how it applies to the work we do today as well as the world around us.
Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” message has served as a long-lasting inspiration to activists, advocates and leaders throughout the world who are working to keep his dream alive. We have seen the progression of civil rights and equity thanks to King and people who continue to fight injustice throughout the world. Hate and racism still exist, but with Dr. King’s legacy, we have hope of a better future.
The injustices we fight today may look different on the surface, but they are only just slightly different from the barriers that fueled the protests of the 1960s. Despite the changing political landscape and the potential effect laws under the new administration may have on Chaffey College, we will not stop fighting to protect all of our students, and to give all of them the tools they need to improve their lives and the lives of their families.
We have numerous Black History Month events planned that I look forward to sharing with you in the coming weeks.
In observance of Dr. King’s birthday and the national holiday, all campuses will be closed on January 20. Regular schedules will resume on Tuesday, January 21.
Sincerely,
Henry D. Shannon, Ph.D.
