Fontana Ordinance Against Street Vendors
October 26, 2023
Dear Campus Community:
This week, the City of Fontana adopted an ordinance to require code enforcement for street vendors selling food items. News reports have shown a strong divide within the community over this ordinance with several stating that it is targeting Latino communities and undocumented people.
Chaffey College will continue to monitor this situation. While local city council decisions are not the main focus of our work, since Fontana serves as the home for one of our campuses, we care very much about any decision that could negatively impact our students and their families. As the leader of a Hispanic-Serving Institution, I believe firmly that our strength is centered around all of our diversity. When our student communities feel vulnerable or targeted by external decisions or policies, I want to reassure them that Chaffey College is the place they will always belong. Our campuses are the places for all students – regardless of their background or documentation status – to feel safe and welcomed. It is all of us who make Chaffey College the great place that it is.
Thank you,
Henry D. Shannon, Ph.D.
